Career Coaching: Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about working with a career coach but not sure what to expect?

Here are honest answers to the questions people ask most. These are based on 14 years of career coaching and conversations with more than 400 clients.

About Career Coaching

What does a career coach do?

A career coach helps you get clarity on your career direction. Unlike job placement services or resume writers, a career coach works with you to understand who you are at a deeper level: your natural talents, what motivates you, what kind of work environment brings out your best, and what you actually care about.

Jeff Baker's approach is built around guided self-discovery. Through exercises, conversations, and visual modeling, he helps you build a Personal Blueprint (a map of who you are at your best) and an Ideal Work Model (a clear picture of the type of work where you will thrive). The goal is not to tell you what to do. It is to help you see so clearly that the right path becomes obvious.

What is the difference between a career coach and a career counsellor?

Career counsellors typically focus on the mechanics of a job search: assessments, resume writing, interview preparation, and job matching. Career coaching, at least the way Jeff practices it, goes deeper. It addresses the foundational question of who you are and what type of work aligns with your nature. Think of it this way: a counsellor helps you get a job, a coach helps you figure out what job to get.

What is the difference between a career coach and a therapist?

Therapists help you work through emotional or psychological challenges, often rooted in the past. Career coaches are forward-focused and action-oriented. Jeff's coaching does involve deep self-reflection, but it is always in service of a practical career outcome: building a clear direction you can act on.

Can a career coach help me if I do not know what I want?

That is exactly who Jeff works with. Most clients come in saying "I know this is not it, but I do not know what is." The entire Career Revisioning Program is designed for people who feel stuck because they lack clarity, not because they lack options.

About the Process

How does career coaching work with Jeff Baker?

Everything happens via one-on-one Zoom sessions. A typical path looks like this:

1. Free Consultation (30 minutes): An honest conversation about your situation. Jeff will tell you if coaching is the right fit, and he will tell you if it is not.

2. Career Roadmap Session ($195, 2 hours): A focused deep-dive to understand your career situation and identify immediate next steps. Many clients use this as a starting point before committing to the full program.

3. Career Revisioning Program ($2,995, ~2.5 months): The comprehensive experience. Roughly 18 hours of one-on-one coaching across four phases: Self-Discovery, Ideal Work Model, Exploration, and Strategic Transition Planning.

Between sessions, you complete exercises and reflections that build toward your Personal Blueprint and Ideal Work Model. These are visual documents created on Miro that you keep and reference for the rest of your career.

How long does career coaching take?

The Career Revisioning Program runs approximately 2.5 months with weekly sessions. Some clients move faster, some take a bit longer. Jeff works at your pace and does not rush the process, because real clarity cannot be forced. For a quicker engagement, the Career Roadmap Session is a single 2-hour session that provides meaningful direction in one sitting.

What happens in the first session?

The free consultation is a 30-minute conversation where Jeff listens to your situation, asks questions, and gives you an honest assessment of whether coaching is the right next step. There is no pitch or pressure. If coaching is not the right fit, Jeff will tell you directly.

Is career coaching done in person or online?

All of Jeff's coaching is delivered via Zoom. This format works well because career coaching is built on conversation, exercises, and reflection. Jeff works with clients across Canada and internationally.

About Cost and Value

How much does career coaching cost?

Jeff offers three levels of engagement:

Free Consultation: $0 for 30 minutes

Career Roadmap Session: $195 for 2 hours

Career Revisioning Program: $2,995 for the full ~2.5 month program

All prices are in Canadian dollars. The Career Revisioning Program includes a 100% satisfaction guarantee: if you do not achieve career clarity, Jeff will keep working with you until you do.

Is career coaching worth the investment?

Consider the cost of staying stuck. If you have been circling the same career question for a year or more, that indecision has a real price: in lost income from not pursuing the right path, in energy drained by work that does not fit, and in time that passes without progress. Jeff's Career Revisioning Program has a 100% success rate over four years. Every client has achieved the career clarity they came for. The investment pays for itself many times over when it leads to a career that actually fits.

Do you offer payment plans?

Contact Jeff directly to discuss options. The focus is always on making the coaching accessible to people who are ready to do the work.

About Career Changes

Can I change careers at 35?

Yes, and you are far from alone. The most common age of Jeff's clients is 34. Mid-career transitions are not only possible; they are Jeff's specialty. His program helps you leverage your existing skills, experience, and natural talents while redirecting them toward work that genuinely fits.

Is it too late to change careers at 40? At 45?

Jeff has worked with clients across a wide age range. The Career Revisioning Program is designed to help you understand your fundamental nature, which does not expire. Whether you are 30 or 50, the process of discovering what you are built for is equally valid and equally valuable.

How do I change careers without losing everything I have built?

This is the fear that keeps most people stuck: the idea that changing direction means throwing away years of experience and income. Jeff's approach does not require reckless leaps. The program helps you understand what transferable strengths you have, what kind of work aligns with your nature, and how to make a strategic transition that builds on what you have already accomplished.

What if I make the wrong career move?

This is actually the number one fear Jeff's clients express: not losing money, but investing time and energy in a new direction only to end up stuck again. The whole point of the Career Revisioning Program is to give you so much clarity about who you are and what fits you that the risk of a wrong move is dramatically reduced. When you have a Personal Blueprint and Ideal Work Model, you can evaluate any opportunity against a clear framework instead of guessing.

About AI and Careers

How is AI changing careers?

AI is automating routine tasks across every industry. Roles that involve repetitive analysis, data entry, basic content creation, and standard decision-making are being transformed fastest. But AI is also creating new types of work and amplifying human strengths like creativity, empathy, strategic thinking, and complex problem-solving. The professionals who will thrive are those who understand their unique human strengths and learn to work alongside AI, not compete with it.

Should I worry about AI taking my job?

Rather than worrying, take action. Understanding your natural talents and strengths is the best protection against AI displacement. When you know what you bring that AI cannot replicate (and every person has this), you can position yourself in roles that leverage those strengths. Jeff brings hands-on AI expertise and multiple AI certifications to his coaching practice. He helps clients understand what AI means specifically for their career path, not just in general terms.

What is an AI-forward career coach?

Jeff uses the term "AI-forward" because he actively integrates AI knowledge into his career coaching. He has spent two years immersed in AI technology, holds certifications in AI strategy and applications, and helps clients navigate career decisions with a realistic understanding of how AI is reshaping the job market. This is not a marketing label. It reflects genuine expertise that most career coaches do not have.
